HJA Brown Scholarship Award

NOTE: This award is open to students in the Peel District School Board.

Background:

The HJA Brown Scholarship Award is an award named after HJA “Jack” Brown. Mr. Brown believed in the core values of integrity of sport: positive attitude, empathy, respect, honesty, and fair play. He felt that sports and physical activity were essential to maintaining and improving the health and well-being of Peel students. When students are involved in sports, they improve in school, become stronger leaders, create safer communities, are inclusive and fuel healthy habits for life.

SPECIFICATIONS

1. One scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to an applicant that best exemplifies the criteria below.

2. Top applicants will be given an interview by a member of the HJA Brown Scholarship Committee and will be notified by email.

3. The successful applicant will be notified forthwith and appropriate arrangements made for the announcement of the award.

4. Upon written confirmation from the post-secondary institution that the student is enrolled in the prescribed program, the scholarship funds will be forwarded to the student.

5. The name of the award recipient will be announced at the completion of the process

Criteria for Award Recipient:

  • grade 12 student entering a Kinesiology, Health, Physical Education, or Recreation post-secondary program at University of College
  • achievement in Health and Physical Education courses
  • demonstrates exemplary integrity of sport: positive attitude, fair play, empathy, respect, honesty
  • demonstrates involvement and leadership in their school’s Athletics and/or extracurricular programs for physical health and wellbeing. (e.g. team captain, Athletic council)
  • demonstrates involvement and commitment to the development of sports/recreation in their community (e.g. sport instructor, volunteer, referee, etc.)
  • paragraph explaining their future intentions and career path

Applicants will be required to provide a teacher reference in their application.
